The lights are out at Tavern on the Green. The legendary Central Park restaurant had its last call early Friday, closing the doors after one last New Year's Eve blowout bash. More than 1,500 revellers gave this old acquaintance, which opened during the Great Depression and fell victim to this century's crippling recession, a sendoff to remember.
"It's such a landmark historical place in New York City," said Deborah Newallo, after her band did their encore in the Chestnut Room."The place has a good vibe and I feel that's not going to be captured anymore. I told my audience to take the spirit of this place with them in remembrance of “Tavern on the Green.”
From near and from far, they came to live it up one last time."It's terribly sad it's closing," said Carolyn Cronan, 63, of Dalton, Ga., who got hooked on the Tavern when she came to the city for Donald Trump's marriage to Marla Maples in 1993."We always come to the Tavern because it's such a magical place." Theresa Casciato, who hails from Pittsburgh, said she didn't know the Tavern was closing when she chose to celebrate her 50th birthday there."I'd never been here before and it sounded like something to see, with a lot of history to the place," she said. Casciato said she never expected to "be part of history, too.”
For the LeRoy family, its operators since 1973 and for the hundreds of people who worked at the Tavern, it was more than just the end of an era. Chatsuda Yuteng, who worked as a coatroom attendant for 20 years, donned her own coat and headed for the door. "I don't know what I'm going to do yet," said Yuteng, 45, of Bergenfield, N.J. "It feels like home here. I didn't even buy gifts for my daughter this year because things are bad.”
A new eatery is expected to open at that 67th St. and Central Park West location sometime in March. Dean Poll, who runs the Loeb Boathouse restaurant overlooking the park's lake, got a 20-year lease on the property after promising a $25 million makeover.
Jennifer LeRoy is still fighting to maintain control of the name Tavern on the Green. If she wins the court battle in Manhattan Federal Court this month, she can open a new Tavern on the Green at another location - and Poll will dub his restaurant Tavern in the Park.
