2) Dale is a 52-year-old White man who works as a prison guard in Arizona and was referred to counseling because he has had multiple verbal and physical altercations at work with inmates. In the past month, Dale has been involved in two physical altercations with prisoners, both of which were caused by Dale calling prisoners by racist names. Based on his work behavior, his supervisor referred him to counseling as a condition of his continued employment. Dale does not want to be in counseling, as he does not think that he needs to change anything, but he has attended the first session in order to maintain his employment. Dale was a police officer for 18 years and was terminated from the police force due to racial profiling and his inability to work collaboratively with his minority colleagues. After termination, he served as a bouncer at a local bar for 4 years but quit to pursue a job with higher income and medical benefits for his painful rheumatoid arthritis. Dale has worked in the prison system for 2 years. Dale has been married twice. He was married to his first wife for 6 years and had one son from that marriage who is currently 21 years old. His son was raised primarily by his ex-wife, and Dale saw him on holidays and for 2 weeks during the summer. Dale no longer has contact with his son. Dale broke contact after his son brought home a Latina girlfriend; Dale states that the "Mexicans and Blacks are taking over his country but won't take over his family." Dale describes his ex-wife as a "lying whore" who he believes had multiple affairs during the marriage while he worked long hours as a police officer. He says she denies these accusations, but Dale says that "you can't really trust women." He also thinks she did a "terrible job" raising their son, and he described his son as a "big baby." Dale has been married to his second wife, Anne, for 3 years. Anne works as a clerk at a grocery store in their small town.

Theory/Theorist: Adlerian

Presenting Problems: Dale, a 52-year-old correctional officer, faces employment issues due to multiple altercations with inmates. His racial biases have led to problems in both his current job and previous career as a police officer. Dale's negative views extend to his relationships, particularly with his son from his first marriage, whom he has severed ties with due to racial prejudice.

Hypothesis: Dale's history of racial profiling, conflicts at work, and strained relationships are rooted in deep-seated biases and unresolved issues from his past, including his first marriage and his perception of racial and cultural changes in society. His desire to dominate/rule over others shows that he overcompensates his feelings of inferiority (Dufrene & Clark, 2022).

Goal: The primary goal will be to challenge and modify Dale's racial biases and prejudices by exploring and addressing unresolved issues from his first marriage and strained relationship with his son which will increase his ability to collaborate with others and build healthier relationships that will balance the three life tasks Alder believed in, work, community, and love (Dufrene & Clark, 2022).

Intervention:

• Using Alder's lifestyle analysis component of encouragement, we will challenge and reframe Dale's negative beliefs and biases by exploring the origins of his racial biases' perspectives (Dufrene & Clark, 2022). This will benefit Dale's social relationships in his personal life with his son and in his work life by increasing his social interest and finding out what feelings of inferiority he has.
• Using Alder's early developmental experiences and recollections, and family atmosphere and values to explore significant events and relationships from Dale's past that contribute to his current mindset and behaviors and working towards replacing them with more adaptive and inclusive perspectives (Dufrene & Clark, 2022). In our Adlerian video this week, Dr. Carlson used family atmosphere and values with Gina by recalling how she, her mom, and her dad all felt unappreciated and that they didn't get any recognition. Recalling this information led to a pattern with Gina always feeling alone and figuring things out herself, looking out for herself, and not appreciating anyone else because she never felt appreciated, evolving to selfishness. Dr. Carlson then mentions Gina's conflict with her ex-husband, asking her how her selfishness affected that relationship, and challenging her to ask what it would look like to have a conversation with her ex-husband now. This allowed Gina to think about her part in the relationship and how her actions and reactions affected her ex-husband during their marriage, and she took accountability for it (Psychotherapy.net, 2008).

Expected Outcome: Dale should demonstrate increased awareness of his biases, a shift in his attitudes towards race and relationships, improved coping mechanisms for workplace stress, and a willingness to engage in collaborative and inclusive interactions with others.
