Father: Darren (White British, age 35) Father: Ramesh (Pakistani British, age 37) Daughter: Julia (White British, age 5) Darren and Ramesh have been in a relationship for 10 years and adopted Julia one year ago. Julia had been in care since she was a baby and has never known her birth parents. Darren grew up in care after his parents died when he was 10. He was moved between a number of foster homes until he reached the age of 16, when he was moved to semi-independent accommodation in a bed-and-breakfast. There, he experienced discrimination from other residents because of his sexual orientation, and he briefly worked in prostitution, something he says he was coerced into by other residents. Darren describes his poor experience in care as being a major motivation for wanting to adopt his own child. Because of his history in care, Darren describes the adoption process as particularly onerous, and he feels he was discriminated against by the social worker involved because of his care background. Ramesh was initially reluctant to adopt. He said that his family was not accepting of his lifestyle and that the adoption would create further tensions. However, he agreed because he saw how much it meant to Darren. However, he says that since the adoption Darren has been struggling with his mental health, something Ramesh attributes to having to relive the trauma of Darren's own experiences in care during the adoption process. Julia has recently started school. Her teacher has raised concerns that she does not come to school with food and her clothing is always dirty. One day Julia came to school with a bruise on her face and said that her dad hit her, although she didn't identify which dad.
