He was moved between a number of foster homes until he reached the age of 16, when he was moved to semi-independent accommodation in a bed-and-breakfast. There, he experienced discrimination from other residents because of his sexual orientation, and he briefly worked in prostitution, something he says he was coerced into by other residents. Darren describes his poor experience in care as being a major motivation for wanting to adopt his own child.
