Read the ethical vignette below carefully. Once you have read and analyzed the vignette, use the 3 multicultural competencies and cultural conflict resolution strategies that were discussed in class to determine if the therapist's behavior was ethical or not.
Maurice is a psychoanalytically trained therapist who places great emphasis on the importance of individuation and separation of the late adolescent from parents. Ling, a 19-year-old, comes to him because of depression and family conflict. Ling is an electrician's apprentice. His parents, who immigrated from China many years ago, are owners of a large accounting firm. They always expected Ling to take over the business. Instead, Ling dropped out of college and chose a career as an electrician. Ling loves his work but he is troubled by his family's reaction to his choice. Ling enters counseling when he is at the point of acquiescing to his parents' plans for him and returning to college. Maurice decides such a reversal would be counterproductive for Ling. He asks Ling to consider moving out of his parents' home to give himself time to objectively consider his options. Ling reluctantly agrees.
