Read the following case study and answer the following questions.
Samuditha is a 21-year-old female from a middle-income family in Sri Lanka. She is talented in drawing and designing things and is currently following a course in fashion design. She entered the course with high hopes of becoming a top fashion designer in the country. However, things have not gone according to plan. She often feels the lecturers in the faculty are very strict and have favorites, and that she is not one of them. She has always felt very uncomfortable in front of crowds and often tried to avoid social situations, and this has become a problem for her as most of her assignments on the course require her to present her work in front of a panel. When she was in school her teachers would try to push her to present in front of the class but since she always got so upset, they would give her written assignments to do as an alternative. She remembers that the first time she experienced any type of distress relating to presenting something was after a teacher reprimanded her for not speaking loud enough when she was reading out the English textbook to the rest of the class.
Samuditha recalls how once when she was presenting, she could not get the words out and she started sweating and trembling. One particular lecturer had been extremely harsh and had asked her what she was doing on the program if she could not even present a simple thing. She did not return to the academy after that. Her friends tried to convince her to return to the course, but she now avoids their calls as well. Samuditha feels that although they are trying to make her feel better, she has also seen them laughing at her when she was presenting. She sleeps till late and feels that there is nothing to keep her going. She does not have a good relationship with her parents, since she thinks they always preferred her older sister more than her. Her sister, Pramuditha is a doctor and is about to travel to the US for postgraduate studies. Although she loves her sister, Samuditha feels as though everything always works out better for her sister. Pramuditha has seen her sister struggling in situations involving crowds and has always supported her. She has also arranged for a psychotherapist that Samuditha could go to for treatment.
Her parents feel that she should not have chosen to study a fashion design course. Her father, who runs a food business, often complains that her course fees are too expensive and that he is unsure about whether he can afford to spend more money for her to complete the course. Her mother sometimes supports Samuditha to do what she likes, but at other times supports her father’s views. Samuditha has a male friend who has been interested in her for a while but has not wanted to start a romantic relationship with him because she wants to sort out issues in her life first. She feels at this stage in her life that she does not have enough energy to contribute to a relationship.
