Juan is a 30-year-old man with a wife and three children, ages 2, 4, and 6. About two months ago, he was fired from his job as a cook at a local restaurant because of frequent tardiness, absenteeism, and showing up to a breakfast shift hungover. His wife, Rosa, works as a waitress, but they are struggling to make ends meet without Juan's income. Juan has gained about 20 lbs. since losing his job, sleeps a lot of the time, and doesn't feel motivated to look for work.

Rosa is worried and says, "He used to be so happy and active. I don't know what's wrong with him, but he's changed." Rosa states that Juan used to enjoy cooking at work and home but now spends most of his time on the couch watching TV, "eating Takis, frozen dinners, and drinking beer." Juan recognizes that he's not helping out like he used to, and he's worried about the strain he's putting on Rosa and the role model he's being for his children. He feels ashamed that she's supporting the family as he believes that's his job, but he cannot find a way out of his rut. When Rosa learned about free counseling offered at a local Clinic, she asked Juan if he'd consider it "for the sake of the family." Juan reluctantly agreed and is sitting next to Rosa with you now.
