Read the following passage and give your view on whether you agree or disagree with the perspective taken on Enterprise. You may need to reference their website( rental and holdings) in order to see what their ethical principles are and corporate code of ethics.
Founded by a former WWII Navy fighter pilot, Enterprise Car Rental, and its parent Enterprise Holdings, are guided by a founding values document and a corporate code of conduct. Founder Jack Taylor stated, "Take care of customers and employees first, and everything else will follow" Much of the remaining founding values are attributed to him. By most written accounts, Jack was a decent man who gave back to society. The remaining founding values are similarly inspirational and mirror most modern values statements. I do particularly like "Our doors are open" as an inclusion statement for a company in the automotive industry. The code of conduct is a much more detailed document that builds upon the founding values. It contains examples of encouraged and discouraged behaviors, procedures for reporting violations, thought exercises, and links to resources.
Like most of us, I have rented cars on several occasions. I am certain to have used Enterprise (or Alamo or National, all under same company), but I can't particularly recall any instance of great dissatisfaction. I recall having to wait in long lines and long travels from airport to rental lots, but I don't blame the company for that. A quick online search of fraud or misdeeds by Enterprise shows little results. From all of this, I speculate that Enterprise is a decent company that abides by its stated values and code of conduct.
Is there anyone who thinks differently based on experience?
A primary rival of Enterprise is Hertz Group. They also have a code of conduct - https://images.hertz.com/content/dam/irac/Overlay/enUS/pdfs/Standards-of-Business-Conduct-English.pdf . From browsing around the Hertz site, I have the impression that Hertz does not prioritize values or conduct as much as Enterprise. The code of conduct was a bit harder to find and they do not promote values. They do have focus areas - People, Product, Planet, Our Communities. I do recall some recent bad press for Hertz. Several of their customers were pulled over for driving vehicles reported as stolen - https://www.cbsnews.com/news/hertz-customers-allege-false-arrests-lawsuit/.
Is it possible that having a stronger values system at Enterprise resulted in the avoidance of issues encountered by Hertz?
