Shanya just started working as the only female researcher in a scientific lab that is developing new nanotechnology, to be used for medical procedures such as the targeted delivery of treatment to specific cells. During a conversation, one of her male colleagues, Sam, jokingly wonders whether the same technology would eventually be used for secretive military assassinations. Shanya responds by saying that possibility makes her wonder whether they should proceed with their research at all, given the potential for it to be misused for destruction. Although it has life-saving potential, and make the lives of many people easier, it could also do lot of damage.

Sam rolls his eyes and say "You women can't take a joke, and get too emotionally involved. This is why the lab was better when it was just us guys". Two other researchers in the lab laugh as well, while another looks uncomfortable but says nothing. Shanya is reminded of other comments and jokes she has heard from some of her coworkers about women in science over the last few months, although none have been this explicitly unwelcoming before. She also thinks Sam had grabbed her inappropriately while walking by her the week before, although he claimed it was accidental. She wonders if this job is really worth dealing with the unwelcoming environment, or if she should find a position in a less male dominated lab.
