  • Read theReport from Officer Vasquez BEFORE responding to this discussion. After reading about Winter Jones, what advice would you give her about her situation, BEFORE this incident occurred?
  • List one documented resource she could use for help (search online for agencies and groups that help in situations like hers).

Synopsis: An unidentified black male slapped the victim in the face, causing her to fall backwards onto a concrete sidewalk, splitting her head open. The unconscious victim, Winter JONES, was initially stabilized at the scene by an on-campus school nurse until paramedics arrived. Jones was transported to Mercy Hospital by Ambulance #542. Medics stated that she had severe head trauma.

Origin: On March 8, 2021, at about 1350 hours, I responded to radio call of a person down at 4777 Imperial Ave, which is Lincoln High School. Upon my arrival, I contacted Officer John MARTIN who informed me that paramedics had already taken the victim to the hospital. Officer MARTIN asked if I could assist taking witness statements, since he was headed to the hospital.

Narrative: Several witnesses were waiting inside classroom 530 of the school. Officer Johnson was standing by with them. He had instructed them not to discuss what they had seen with each other and to wait to be interviewed by police. There were four witnesses to the incident. I told them that I was going to interview each one of them privately. I began with Elena RODRIGUEZ who I asked to step outside. Once outside, I interviewed RODRIGUEZ. I continued this process until all the witnesses were interviewed.

Winter's Best Friend: Shanice ROBERTSON On March 8, 2021, at approximately 2000 hours, I contacted Shanice ROBERTSON, Winter's best friend. She essentially told me the following: I knew he was going to hurt her. He seemed like the gangster type. At first, she told he was a photographer, but when I told her I didn't believe it, she told me the truth. That he was making her have sex with other guys for money. He told her that if she didn't, he would kill her family. She believed him. After about a month she got really depressed and said she wanted to kill herself. I told her to tell somebody, but she made me swear I wouldn't tell anyone because she thought he really would kill her family. He belonged to this gang on the eastside. They shot up a lot of people before, so I didn't doubt her. I really felt sorry for her. She had a hard time keeping what was happening from her boyfriend, but he wouldn't have cared anyway, as long as he got what he wanted from her. He didn't even visit her in the hospital. I hope she makes it. I asked ROBERTSON if she knew who the suspect was. She told me she found his information in Winter's phone when she borrowed it.
