Read the story of the Golden Fleece on pp$.31-37.$ This story includes a stock character from folklore$--$the wicked stepmother. In this case, Ino is the stepmother who wants to sacrifice her stepchildren, Phrixus and Helle, who are saved by the flying golden ram and carried away to a distant land. Notice that it is Jason's mother, Alcimede, who is telling the story, and she is telling it to other women, some of whom have sons who are members of the Argonauts. Jason's crew will be leaving the next morning to go on their quest to retrieve the Golden Fleece, and many of them will probably not come back.What significance do you see in the fact that a mother who will probably never see her son alive again is telling the tale of the Golden Fleece to other mothers? What parallels do you see between their situation and the one described in the story with a biological mother losing her children after they are threatened by their scheming stepmother?
