"A true story inspired the North Country movie. It narrated the story of Josey Aimes, a woman who suffered sexual harassment while working at the Mesabi Iron Range mines. The film became very popular and significant at the time because it demonstrated the existence of inequality against women in the workplace. Josey, who suffered from depraving offenses and sexual harassment from her male coworkers, decided to stand up and fight for her rights and a better future for her children. Even though the whole community, her disapproving parents, and many of her colleagues strongly criticized her, she went farther than she ever thought to find a solution to the issue.
One moral breach by the company was that females were mainly selected for the hardest and dirtiest positions that the least experienced males didn't want to perform. Also, the women were placed to work in a dusty room managed by a man who assaulted Josey later. When Josey tried to file a complaint, the raper's supervisor, who was against her, attended the meeting. Furthermore, the company didn't hire or promote women for managerial roles. If they would, that would be an excellent remedy to protect the company against liability, and women's work environment would be less dangerous.
One ethical breach by the company was the non-existence of a policy against inappropriate behavior such as verbal, mental, physical, and sexual harassment to protect the workers inside the company. For example, Josey's supervisor made a sexually explicit joke on her first day. Throughout the film, we can notice the distress caused to female employees by male coworkers by verbally insulting them and writing comments and explicit pictures on walls. Eventually, the lack of ethical standards led the company to lose prestige and income. An excellent remedy to avoid the issues would have been the development of ethical standards and sexual harassment policies to protect the employees."
