I hypothesize that certain changes in stimuli are easier to discriminate than others, is due to absolute threshold and the difference threshold (Mather, 2014). Based on the data from my 40 trials, it was much easier for me to notice the difference in the 3 degree iterations. The range of difference was at a higher threshold and I was able to choose the correct answer 10 out of the 11 times it popped up during my experiment. My correct rejection was at 66% and my 1 degree hit rate was only at 50% This is due to the absolute threshold (Mather, 2014) not being large enough for me to notice. In the real world, this would be like when my wife shows me 10 different shades of grey for a sitting room. Both our absolute thresholds and difference thresholds are completely different, and we take in information via our occipital lobe and photoreceptors much differently than the other.

Psychophysics are important and our understanding and ways of measuring sensation and perception are vital to understanding the type of psychology. In my field of work, I use a lot of senses to relay information to other people. It is vital that I understand my ability of perception and sensation, as well as my subordinates. If I can determine how my subordinates and superiors will receive, translate, and analyze different sensations, it would aid in my execution at work.

  1. Certain changes in stimuli are easier to discriminate than others due to difference threshold. In this experiment specifically, my eyes could differentiate a change of 3 degrees 91% of the time but only notice a 1 degree change 71% of the time. To me, this determined that I was capable of noticing a slight change but I had a more difficult time noticing minimal change. I think this is due to the change being too similar to the original. I think it is possible to train your eyes to discriminate a more subtle change in stimuli. An example of this would be in the radiology field. Radiologist are trained to notice slight changes in an image by adjusting light, saturation, and contrast.
  2. Psychophysics is important in understanding the development of psychology as science because it helps us to understand how our senses work. By studying the relationship between physical stimuli and how we perceive them, psychologists can learn more about how our brains process information. One modern example of this practice is hearing aids. Researchers found that people suffering from hearing loss struggled to understand speech while there was a noisy background because our brains are less able to filter out unnecessary sounds.
