classmate's post:
Hi class,
Overall my mentor meetings went well. I chose to use my boss as my mentor. She is an amazing woman whose main goal is to help serve the community and do everything in her power to serve others rather than herself. I never really got to sit down with her and talk to her about how running a non-profit business is for her and how she manages to do it all on her own with only a few workers underneath her. The overall experience was great. She gave me some business tips and ideas, and she also shared her experiences of the mistakes that she made whilst starting her business, which in the long run could be very helpful to learn from.
I learned quite a lot. My boss had some free time to actually sit down and tell me about how it is for her to run a business all on her own. She's been running her company since 2006, which is a long time. She explained that getting started isn't actually the most difficult part, she told me that continuing your momentum and passion for the business is the most difficult part. She went into further detail explaining why this is true. She said that when you start your business you are pouring so much of your energy into it and you're excited but when all of the financial problems and other troubles come knocking at your door, it's hard for you to stay determined and focused on what your overall main goal is. From her personal experiences that she shared, she was hit with a large amount of debt because she couldn't find anyone to sponsor her workshops or her events, so she poured all of her life savings into this business just to help other people and give the people who believe they do not have a chance, a chance. Her passion was to reach the people who were being pushed to the side. She wanted to help the black community and the people in the homeless shelters, her passion was to focus on them and not herself.
She really motivated me. Her strong passion to help other people got her somewhere. She poured her dedication into her business. She now is able to reach out to people who are in need and help them. I will take her advice about not giving up. Growing a business from the ground up is difficult and you're going to face challenges. Standing your ground and pushing toward your goals aims towards success and with your motivation and not giving up, you will get there. She told me that I shouldn't pour all of my energy into my business when first starting. She told me that I should take it slow and make the right decisions, instead of rushing into things and getting ahead of myself. My boss is an inspiration to me now. Hearing all of her troubles and looking at where she is now is my motivation to not give up.
