I would give the children two options to transport the water from one container to the other. One is using empty water bottles (16.9oz). The children would have to hold it underneath the water to fill it up. Then they would dump it into the other container. In the other container, I would put a bunch of more giant spoons to transfer the water back and forth to the other container. I chose the water bottle because I wanted to see if the children would wait to fill it up to transfer the back and forth or if they would just put a tiny bit in it.
As a child, I remember doing something like this with water balloons. There were two groups of children, and we would toss them back and forth into the buckets to see which bucket would fill up faster. Now that I look back, there were a few challenges in doing this; one is having a good team and taking on a task such as filling up the water balloons and then handing them off to whoever was throwing them into the bucket.
Before the teacher does the water bin activity, they could talk about filling up a bin of toys and talk about the difference between the two. The teacher could count the toys in them and ask the children what they see. Do they see a filled or empty bin of toys/water?
