Shellbie

At lunch time educator Jabula serves the children their meals individually in plastic bowls and gives them their spoon and sipper cup. Jabula checks the room allergy list before each child receives their bowl.Younger children like Shellbie sit in a highchair with a harness restraint. Jabula closely supervises all children during mealtime. An additional spoon is available for each child so that the educator can assist children learning to feed themselves.

Shellbie (12 months) is learning to eat and drink independently at meal times. Jabula recognisies the importance of allowing Shellbie to explore the texture of foods. As Shellbie is very independent Jabula does not intervene when Shellbie switches from using her spoon to using her hands to feed herself - Jabula knows that this is part of the learning process. Jabula praises Shellie for her efforts. 'You are a clever girl Shellbie. You can feed yourself!'

When she is finished Shellbie lets Jabula know by raising her arms and saying 'Up'.
