Suppose that there is a new virus spreading rapidly across the world, and that as part of the effort to slow the Spread of the virus down everyone who has symptoms compatible with the virus is asked to get tested for the virus. The test is such that it gives a positive result for only 60% of those who carry the virus. Meanwhile it gives a positive result deSpite the virus being absent in 1% of cases. It is estimated that at the moment 2% of the population is carrying the virus. (0) Suppose that a randomly selected person tests positive for the virus. Find the probability that they carry the virus. (d) Suppose that the Stats 125 student Minna, based on having been in close proximity with someone who carries the virus, is assumed before the test to have a 40% probability of car- rying the virus. However, Minna's test comes back negative. What is Minna's probability of carrying the virus when we take the information given by the negative test into account? (e) Assume that the virus spreads rapidly, and that being infected with it could have very dire consequences for some segments of the population. Comment on how to use the information gained from the test to best limit the spread of the virus. [10 marks]
