Recommendation Memo For this assignment, you will write a two-page memo (approximately 600-800 words) comparing two products/services and, ultimately, recommending one product over the other. You must include the following information and sections (do not confuse "sections" with "paragraphs"): I. Header: Follow memo formatting described in course resources (videos, textbook, etc.) II. Introduction: Define the topic and/or reason for writing (see the Intros/Conclusions video on the D2L. schedule) III. Body: The body of your memo must compare 3-4 important attributes of the products/services. IMPORTANT: The costs should be similar, so you will NOT focus on cost as one of the attributes (instead, you can explain that the products/services are in the same class and, therefore, have similar costs). NOTE: Before comparing the attributes, you must explain why they are important and how they can help determine which product is a better choice. So, do not choose something insignificant (such as color). For example, if you were comparing two external hard drives, I might compare the following attributes: storage/memory space, transfer speed, warranty, connection types. Similarly, if I were comparing fly fishing rods, I might compare the following attributes: weight (overall weight plus tip weight), warranty, materials (fiberglass vs graphite, resins, etc.), and taper. For each attribute, you must "triangulate data" (ie., use more than one trusted source for each attribute) and synthesize data (don't just copy facts/stats, but combine multiple sources into a new statement). You must use a variety of sources, such as: A product website (with stats/facts) Professional product reviews (such as Consumer Reports as well as websites/videos featuring experts who have used the product) Consumer reviews (e.g., user reviews from Amazon.com or Walmart.com as long as you don't "cherry pick" a bad or good review, but use the overriding sentiment with a few select quotes that represent that sentiment) Personal assessment (if you own or have tried the product, you can provide your own assessment as long as you compare and contrast your personal assessment to other sources) Remember to use the following Topic sentences (and short, cohesive paragraphs) for each paragraph in the body section Data/synthesis to support each topic sentence Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. Second-page header (see page 99 in our textbook) Sections with descriptive subheads At least 3 typographical devices for emphasis (e.g., bullet lists, bold, italic, etc.)-NOTE: Do not bold or bullet list everything; use these devices sparingly to make important information stand out Transitions between ideas/sentences (such as: In addition, Conversely, Similarly, First, etc.) In-text citations as well as ethical summaries and quotations. For example, you might include sources in parentheses after a sentence OR write, "According to Consumer Reports.com, the average..." as a way to informally site your information. IV. Conclusion: Give a sense of closure or summary State which product you recommend Briefly summarize the main benefits/reasons for your recommendation State whom to contact with questions
