Functions of HRM in Global Management
Focus on 1st principles and apply those to HRM in a global setting. We will use the 1st principles of Management, HRM, and, the Hofstede dimensions of cultures to analyze the HRM issues of the American Factory documentary.
Levels of Analysis: You can analyze any problem at different levels. In this case you can analyze HRM issues on the Chinese side (how workers were chosen to go the USA), the USA side, and or from the HRM perspective of upper management, middle management, lower management and the workers.
The Functions of management are: 1. planning, 2. organizing, 3. leading, and 4. controlling.
The Basic HRM functions are: 1. Recruitment: identification of qualified individuals for a vacant position. 2.Selection: process of filling vacant positions in the organization 3. Training: providing opportunities to help the individual to perform 4. Performance Appraisal: assessing the individual's performance 5. Compensation: providing the adequate reward package 6. Labor Relations: the relationship between the individual and the company
The 4 Hofstede Dimensions are: 1. Individualism-collectivism – USA High on Individualism China High on Collectivism. 2.Uncertainty avoidance – China is lower than the USA. 3.Power distance (strength of social hierarchy) -USA Low – China High. 4.Masculinity-femininity (task-orientation versus person-orientation) – The USA and China are similar.
The FuYao HRM process was very complicated. FuYao brought workers from China to the USA to train the USA workers. I want you to discuss the questions below with classmate and the we will discuss as a class. Much of this we don't know but we can make some guesses. Use the Functions Management, HRM and the Hofstede Dimensions to inform your discussions.

How did FuYao pick the Chinese/USA workers for the USA factory? Think about what was needed; Technical skills, language skills? What were they looking for in the people they hired?
