Also see Chapter 4 for additional details. Note: The use of the website is suggested merely for your convenience. In fact it is not necessary to use the website (if you dont want to use it). If you decide not to use the website then the information you might need to use is as follows - number of teeth in the various gears in the website are: Ring = 78, Sun = 30 Planet = 23. Also, in the animation sometimes it may be difficult to set the speeds very accurately with the cursor of the mouse. In that case just use the closest possible value for the numbers noted in the tables below. Question 1: Is the number of teeth count for various gears given above by manually counting the # of teeth in the website picture mathematically consistent ? Why or why not ? - 10 points Question 2: - 90 points 1. Fill up the blank cells in the tables below using the animation in the above website and/or the text book information (Ch 4). You can use any reasonable numbers which may be satisfactory. 2. If you believe any particular cell cannot be filled up, explain why. 3. If you think there is some problem with this website animation software, explain why. The equations in the text and those we derived are more important and are valid, even if you think the animation may not be working perfectly. 4. Use the equations in chapter 4 in the text, to evaluate the constants km , kg (which correspond to eqn. 4.14 i.e. ?e = km * ?m + kg * ?g which applies to this gear set in the animation, and show that the speeds of the 3 gears (sun, ring, planetary) are indeed linearly related. Note: in equation 4.14 in the text, the constants km , kg are not explicitly written. There the parameters are in terms of number of teeth etc., but the information is equivalent. 5. Can this gear set be used in torque coupling mode, explain why or why not ? What should be done to use it in torque coupling mode ? 6. Can you consider this device to be a CVT (continually variable transmission) explain why or why not and indicate how you can achieve this CVT function. Note the followings for your work above: (a) In this animation, you might have some limitation about the speed range, but you can force (within certain extent) the speed by forcing the speed changing tab/s with the mouse and holding it. (b) For torque, choose the necessary engine torque on the planetary shaft to be within any reasonable range to correspond to a power of 0 to 200 Kilowatts. Since you cannot change the torque in the website animation, you have to use the equations in the book (Ch 4, section 4.2 mainly) or use your own equations related to torque. (c) If you see any flaws anywhere during this exercise, make any reasonable assumption and explain why you had to make that assumption.
