- Reference:* Basu Thakur. (2015). PostcolonialTheory and Avatar (pp. 85-150,157-172). Bloomsbury PublishingUSAYou will write a 1500 to 1750 words Application Paper in which you apply text-based definitions (i.e. definitions derived from your understanding of the key words and phrases, explanations, and examples which address and/or allude to the three categorical concepts) for Subject Production, Knowledge Production, and othering of the Other found in our textbook Postcolonial Theory and Avatar by Gautam Basu Thakur to a Postcolonial Film of your choice. You also will be applying specific passages from Basu Thakur's text which both align and coordinate with your text-based definitions of the three categorical concepts to specific scenes from your film. There is a helpful list of Postcolonial films on https://mubi.com/en/lists/postcolonial-cinema, a number of which I have seen and are quite good. Of course, there are numerous films which are considered postcolonial which are not on any lists, so you might use the determining factor of 'any film which demonstrates the continuing effects of colonialism' in your selection of film. However, for whatever Postcolonial Film you do choose, you will need to be able to apply your text-based definitions of the three theoretical categories above to scenes from your film effectively and convincingly. You also will need to take your reader deeper into the scenes through focusing passages which are aligned to and coordinated with the text-based definitions. Moreover, you will need to demonstrate that you are using postcolonial theory and its concepts correctly, so it is expected that you will provide definitions and explanations from our text when needed (cited appropriately in MLA format). The effective selection of passages from the text will help with this objective. Of course, you want to choose examples of scenes from your Postcolonial Film which best demonstrate the features of the text-based definitions as well as allow for deeper consideration through focusing passages from Basu Thakur's text, so you will need to consider the appropriateness of your selection of scenes and justify their place in the discussion. In the introduction, you need to provide some context via a brief summary (2 to 3 sentences at most) of the plot in connection with the effects of continual colonialism at work in the film. Remember to include the characters with the actors' full names in the summary for reference. Finally, I strongly recommend that you review my sample paper, entitled 'Postcolonial Film Application Paper 1 Sample' (forthcoming) in the Files as a model and that you pose questions about any of the requirements which may be unclear. Additionally, I do recommend that you review 'The Postcolonial Film Application Paper Check List' (forthcoming), for the Peer Review Session, for a better understanding of the process of organizing and structuring the paper. The following are the assessment categories:1) Structure and Organization-- Appropriate Title, Introduction, Position Statement (Thesis), Three Body Paragraphs, and Conclusion Paragraph (Please see Reviewing the Application Paper for A Postcolonial Film found in the Files for a detailed description): /252) Content-- Situating your Discussion in the Text-Based Definitions for Subject Production, Knowledge Production, and othering the Other from the Text-Postcolonial Theory and Avatar, Emphasizing and Utilizing Key Words or Phrases from Selected Passages from Basu Thakur's Text to Examine Scenes from the Film, Illustrating the Evidence from the Film with Vivid Descriptions of Scenes and Helpful Dialogue, Describing and Clarifying the Use of Key Features in the Application Process, and Demonstrating the Value of Your Study of Your Film through the Lens of Postcolonial Theory with Insight, Careful Analysis, and Coherence Of Thought: /253) Format--Diligent Editing and Attention to MLA Format (See the Website Purdue Owl for Instructions and Examples)--Polished Final Draft, Correct Format, Accurate Citations, and Works Cited page in Alphabetical Order: /254) Function-- Utilizing the Process of Applying Text-Based Definitions of the Theoretical Categories: Subject Production, Knowledge Production, and othering the Other, Selecting Appropriate Passages from Our Textbook in Coordination with the Text-Based Definitions to Analyze Appropriate Scenes from the Film, Drawing Conclusions from the Process of Application of Text-Based Definitions and Focusing Passages to Appropriate Scenes, Effecting a Better Understanding of How a Film Means through Postcolonial Theory, Composing a Discussion within the Word Limit: /25
