After reading the Chapter 1 section on management theories, reflect on one of your current or previous managers (preferably in healthcare) and identify the management style that most closely relates to the traits and skills that he or she exhibited as a manager. Describe the traits and skills that made them an effective or ineffective manager. 2. There is a popular saying that "leaders are born, not made." After reading the Chapter 1 section on leadership theories, and reflecting on leaders you have worked with, do you agree or disagree with this statement? Research a journal article that supports your opinion.Discuss your thoughts in a paragraph of 250 to 300 words, using your research as support for your views. Cite your research using APA.

3. You have applied for a director of HIM position and are being interviewed by the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), to whom the position reports. During the interview the CFO asks you to describe your management style. How would you respond? Be sure to give a specific example and name at least one management theory mentioned in Chapter 1. The CFO then asks you about your leadership style. How would you respond?Be sure to give a specific example and name at least one leadership theory mentioned in Chapter 1.

4. Both the AHIMA Code of Ethics and Standards of Ethical Coding are in place to help HIM professionals deal with workplace ethical issues they may face. Choose an ethical issue (but not the one from the lecture) that an HIM professional might face and apply the multistep decision-making approach (p. 41 in the textbook) to support the outcome. Be sure to name each step and provide a clear explanation to the approach. Identify and evaluate at least two options to the problem. You may use your ethical issue from the discussion board if it is in-depth enough to apply the decision-making steps, or you may interview someone, or search for an HIM ethical issue online. If you use an interview or online example, provide an APA formatted reference.

5. Dashboards are common presentation methods for the controlling function of management discussed in Chapter 2. Key indicators can be quickly presented to a board of directors or a committee. Locate a dashboard with a healthcare theme and share the example by copying and pasting it below. If possible, share a dashboard from your work place. Explain what the purpose of the dashboard is, what it displays, and who might review it. Discuss your opinion of the dashboard: is it reader-friendly, too complicated, or too basic? Be sure to provide a working link to the dashboard website for your instructor to check.If you use a dashboard example from your work place, no reference is necessary other than explaining this.

6. Chapter 2 discusses both physical and cultural barriers to communication that get in the way of effective leadership. Choose a barrier to communication and research (outside the textbook) best practices to either reduce or eliminate the barrier. Be sure to clearly explain your choice of barrier and briefly summarize the best practices to deal with the barrier. The discussion of the barrier and best practices should be between 250 to 350 words. Cite your research using APA.
