Reference questions The table on below shows the values for the number of cousins of the entire population of students in a private school who answered that survey question during the first week of class. Our population size in this case is N = 24. Because that is a two-digit number we will use index numbers (i) of two digits, beginning with 01, 02, etc., up to 24. (Note that you need to include leading zeroes on the index numbers, depending on your population size, to ensure that all index numbers are the same length.) The xi values are the number of cousins reported by the student associated with index number i. You will use these xi values to calculate the statistics. Do not use the index numbers themselves in the calculations! The index numbers are only used to help you decide which observations to include in your sample. You then use the value of xi associated with that index number in your calculations. Remember that since the index numbers are two digits in this case, you will take the numbers in the random number table two digits at a time, and will skip any values that do not work for this population.
