The Poliovirus has caused for several epidemics in the United States between the years 1948-1955. It is an incurable and serious disease that can cause muscle paralysis, permanent central nervous system damage and even death. The gastrointestinal tract is considered the harbor for the infection with the route of transmission mainly being oral and/or oral-fecal. Because polio still has no available cure, prevention is important. The first vaccine was developed in 1955 and helped to eradicate the disease, allowing Polio to be considered eliminated in North America by the year 1994 (Rai et al., 2022). If this disease were to make a reappearance in the United States again in the year 2023, causing a noticeable uptick in cases, the country would act quickly. Knowing what we do now, we know prevention and immediate action is key. Healthcare workers should be trained and learn what signs and symptoms to look out for in patients. Modern techniques in case detection will help contain the virus before it spreads to others. In my opinion, the main way to stop the spread of a potential outbreak is to advocate for effective vaccination coverage programs. Routine immunization should be strengthened and encouraged, focusing on pregnant women, newborns, immigrants, the elderly, and the unreachable population. The goal is to have more people vaccinated with a proven effective vaccine who were not already vaccinated in the past. From a political standpoint, if resources and funding are properly allocated, we can improve polio case detection and disease response. At the same time, communities will be better equipped to detect and respond if there ever is another epidemic of this brutal disease.
