After graduating, I started working as a staff nurse in a hospital. In my role, I had to provide quality care to the patient, interact with many patients and their families, and ensure that their needs were met with utmost care and consideration.

One specific incident stands in my mind. A patient's family praised me for providing exceptional care. However, I later learned that the patient's family had misinterpreted my statement. Upon assessing a patient, I noticed a concerning symptom and suggested that the patient see a doctor for further evaluation. It was important for the patient to receive adequate medical attention, considering the potential severity of the issue. I had recommended that the patient see a doctor for a particular topic, and the family thought I had told them they must see a doctor. Because of this misinterpretation, the patient did not receive the medical help they needed.

• The three communication barriers that affected the communication process in this scenario are:

1. Language and clarity: there was a misunderstanding due to the family's misinterpretation of what I had said. This was probably due to my inability to be honest and the need for appropriate body language while I was speaking.
2. Cultural differences: the patient and their family likely had cultural norms and values from me. This might have contributed to a misunderstanding, making it more challenging for them to comprehend what I meant.
3. Listening and comprehension: There may have been several circumstances that influenced the family's capacity to pay attention and grasp the information given. They could have been emotionally drained, worried about the patient's condition, or stressed out from being at the hospital. These elements could have made it more difficult for them to comprehend and understand the specifics of my advice.
