Reindeer and caribou are considered subspecies of the samespecies (Rangifer tarandus). They are members of theCervidae (the deer family), and yet they have several physical andbehavioral characteristics unlike any other member of Cervidae. Both sexes have antlers with those of the males being slightlylarger (only males have antlers in other deer). The males mate withmore than one female (similar to other deer). The females givebirth to one offspring each spring (twins have never beenobserved). Both sexes travel together all year long across theArctic tundra and the boreal forests in herds containing severalthousand individuals (in other deer dominant males only form anddefend harems of 10-15 does during breeding season). There is noappearance of territorial behavior in either sex of caribou. Theyhave no fixed home range. Instead the herds move from placeto place looking for food. The pattern of the movement however ispredictable. Caribou return to the same locations at the same timeseach year. The principle predators of caribou arewolves. A) Explain the selectivepressures behind these characteristics that would cause R.tarandus to be so unique among allCervidae. B) What special considerationsin the management of caribou do these unique characteristicspresent? C) What new challenges tosurvival do you think caribou will face in the next hundredyears?
