Reply and/or give feedback about the following post regarding Erickson's Eight Stages of Psychological Development.
According to Friedman (1999), Erik Erikson is a psychologist and psychoanalysts who was born in Frankfurt, Germany. He made significant strides in twentieth century psychology, based on a person's identity; which in turn lead him to create the eight stages of psychological development (Friedman,1999). In 1944,Erikson developed these eight stages after his fourth daughter was born with Down syndrome and institutionalized (Friedman, 1999). Using personal experience Erikson was able to use his family as an example for his theories (Friedman, 1999).
What exactly is the purpose of the of the eight stages of psychological development?Lazzara (2020) gives a general idea of what the purpose of the study is: "He believed that humans developed in stages throughout their lifetimes, and this would affect their behaviors" (p.9). This starts from early infancy to older adulthood (Sacco, 2013).
What are the eight developmental stages? Sacco (2013), defines Erikson'seight developmental stages as: " trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. identity confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation, and ego integrity vs. despair, which are related to the following ages: early infancy (1-1 12), toddler (1 12-3), early childhood (3-6), middle childhood (6-12), adolescence (12-18), young adulthood (19-40), middle adulthood (40-65), and older adulthood (65+)" (p.140).These developmental ages are theorized to have changes in cognitive, social interactions, intellectual, and personality over a person's lifetime (Lazzara, 2020). Which has helped in research on how a person's characteristics changed, and how they change their thought processes (Sacco, 2013). Each of the eight stages have an influence on one another (Sacco, 2013).
