1. Do you support an increase in the state or federal minimum wage? If yes, how much do you think it should be increased and why? If no, why do think it's at a good level or why do you think it should be either lowered or eliminated?

While the economics text makes a clear argument as to why government is needed in the provision of public goods such as national defense, do you believe government should also play a role in making society more equitable (meaning just and fair) in terms of the opportunities that people have to succeed in life (more specifically, should the government ensure children have access to the nutrition, healthcare, and education needed for healthy brain and skill/ability development)? What is the reasoning that caused you to arrive at this conclusion?

Jessica Frydenlund Wednesday I agree with you when you say that minimum wage should be progressively increased to a level that is more in line with the cost of living. I think it could help to eliminate poverty because people will be able to live more comfortably. On the other hand, do you think that raising minimum wage would then result in inflation? If businesses raise minimum wage they would have to raise their prices. Also, you mentioned that there would be job losses. Do you think that the loss of jobs is worth raising minimum wage? I agree with you when you say that government can contribute to a more equitable society. All children should have access to the things you mentioned and it would be wrong to deny some kids these things and let other kids have them. I think that government can contribute to a more equitable society and give people more fair opportunities. I also think that government should give people the resources they need, to learn how to be successful on their own.Lea Bahner Thursday I agree with what you said about how specifics should differ depending on where you are and what is needed in that community. I think there may be some kind of compromise, though, not just fully depending on a higher minimum wage. Do you think maybe a needs-based wage could work? Having a minimum, but one that could be lower for teens who just want something to do over the summers, and higher for those who can only get that job and need it to support their family? This made me think of the graphs that have been showing up in our readings, and where the point of equilibrium is..but HOW do we know what that is for minimum wage rate vs the overall economic effect? The video that showed the minimum wage rates throughout the years got me wondering about this even more because it appears that the value of our dollar is also decreasing as the wage increases. So, larger wage increases are having a smaller effect on spending capabilities? I don't know the answers. I agree that the government should help society in these regards. To respond to the second portion of your post: the constitution states that one of the purposes of government is to, "...promote the general welfare" of the American people. This means that every law and action taken by the government has to be for the good of all citizens without regard to race, gender, age, etc. However, I do not believe it's the government's job to be the source of benefits for the people. The government should create laws that help individuals and businesses thrive and be their own sources of equitable opportunities. In general, I believe that the less government control. the better. When the government takes more control, the people lose more of their freedom and motivation to build a stronger competitive economy
