According to Hofstede, "uncertainty-averse cultures are more expressive and less receptive to new ideas." (The Hofstede Group) I scored a perfect 100 on the first set of questions that asked whether or not I agreed with statements like "do I think that it is important for a job to have requirements and instructions spelled out in detail" and "standard operating procedures are helpful to employees on the job." Having a set of standard operating procedures and a clear and straightforward order of business doesn't seem like a bad thing to me. Employees should be required to abide by the policies and procedures established by their employer. There is logic for their existence. If you don't stick to the norms in my line of work, you'll probably die. I am well aware that this is not the case in the vast majority of professions, but I maintain that it is always best to play by the book. To be honest, I don't see how obeying orders from above may help you feel more secure in your job.
