1-Teratogens are factors or substances that can affect prenatal development and cause birth defects. Two common teratogens I hear about the most are tobacco and prescription drugs. Prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke can increase the risk of premature birth, low birth weight, and SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). Later in life, tobacco use during prenatal development can cause developmental delays in the child, behavior problems, and cognitive impairments, among other things. Some prescription drugs are linked to birth defects, such as facial abnormalities and limb deformities, heart defects, neural tube defects, and cognitive impairments. I believe that dosage is the most important information to provide, because anything can turn dangerous with too high of a dose.
