When we talk about the "stereotype threat," we mean the possibility that unfavorable stereotypes about a person's racial, ethnic, gender, or cultural group will be proven to be true. Repetitive stereotyping as a threat can set off a vicious cycle of low confidence, poor performance, and disinterest in the relevant area of achievement. It has been hypothesized that people who belong to groups that are stereotyped negatively will perform worse as a result of the threat that the stereotype poses to them. Adults have the power to shape children's beliefs about what is expected of them as group members. Although some people are more vulnerable to the negative effects of stereotype threat than others, stereotype threat is more prevalent in some contexts than others. Overall, stereotyping has a significant impact on young adults whose brains are still developing; this impact shapes their future attitudes toward the group in which they were characterized.
