I chose to talk about exercise 1 which discusses the idea that crime is impacted by TV show violence. In this research design, they asked 100 juvenile delinquents about how much time they spent watching violent shows, and if that number was over 4 hours then it was considered a significant amount of time. The researchers said if 60 percent of them or more said they spent more than 4 hours watching TV, there is a correlation that would prove this hypothesis correct. In my opinion, this study does not seem like a good way to test this hypothesis. This study has misleading operational definitions, and the biggest one I see is when they say they are looking for if the delinquents watched "violent TV". Violent television is such a broad term because there are many different types of violence. There is domestic violence, action movie violence, scary movie violence, and many more categories. The study is not specific enough about which type which leaves room for too much interpretation. In addition, they did not specify what the juvenile delinquents were in juvie for. They should have gotten a group of people who were in there for violent-related crimes. I say this because there could have been someone who was in this study who was arrested for robbery or something nonviolent but their data was still added to the study because they watched over 4 hours of violent TV. The 100 participants have been one of the controlled variables in this experiment but it was not controlled. Since there are some variables that were not controlled and some variables that were very broad, you couldn't test the design to find a relationship between the two variables.
