Alam Jaya Sdn Bhd of Ipoh, is a construction oriented company that provides a variety of products and services. The products include sand, aggregates, regular concrete, and ready-mix concrete. The services consist of constructing pavements, earthworks such as parks, concrete structures and other projects. Raw materials are dredged from the bottom of Sungai Kinta and conveyed to the nearby crushing and sand plant, where they are crushed, screened, mixed and otherwise processed. Finished products are checked for quality and then stored. Ordered products are dispatched to the points where needed, which may be the locations of the customers' facilities or the site of construction projects. Most of the trucks are ready-mix concrete trucks, which pour at the dispatched locations. Dispatching is done by three dispatchers who prepare delivery order based on telephone calls from customers, on sales orders taken by salesperson, or on requisitions received from construction supervisors. The next available truck is assigned to fill an order. If more thaone truck is available, the one that has been waiting the longest is assigned. On receiving his/her assignment the driver is given two copies of the delivery notes, which show the person to whom sold, the date, the truck driver, and the quantity sold. The driver then loads and gives the copies to a warehouse worker, who records weight loaded on the tickets and returns a copy to the driver. After the load has been delivered. the driver initials the delivery ticket and returns the ticket to the dispatcher. Then the dispatcher stamps the time of return on the ticket. At the end of each week, the notes are delivered to accounting department for processing. Certain problems have been noted in this procedure. Customers on occasion dispute bills received for concrete or other delivered products such as double billing, monthly statements shown an undue collectable amount. Truck drivers tend to have excessive idle time on some days and to work overtime (at time and a half pay) on other days. The times required to deliverer loads to same locations vary considerably among truck drivers.
