Many things affect the power that leaders have at their disposals. During this week's discussion, we will explore the relationship between dependence and power. Your post should consider the following questions: 0 What are the bases of power? 0 Which bases of power do you think you have at work? 0 What is the relationship between power and dependence? 0 If you do not have all of the bases of power (or low amounts of a particular power), which bases of power do you think you should acquire? o If you do have all of the bases of power at work, how did you get all of the bases of power? Assignment Overview The learning summary is a 1 to 1.5-page document. The learning summary should be single-spaced, Calibri11 point type or Helvetica 10-point-type, and have oneinch margin. You will write the Learning Summary to the instructor based on two readings you will select from the list assigned for this week (see list in the Week 3 Overview located in the Table of Contents -> Learning Modules -> Week3 area of DZL). It will be a confidential document. Grading will be based on the comprehensiveness of your analysis and integration of relevant course materials. I would like to caution that a common mistake is for students to write an autobiographical account of an event or events that took place at their workplaces. I would not recommend this. The learning summary is not intended to serve as a sort of diary. Please do not describe your work history or other aspects of your life, unless you are prepared to analyze them from the perspective of the course material. | place much less value on mere descriptions of events and much greater value on in-depth analysis (e.g., why, how, etc.) accompanied by critical insights. Indeed, I especially wish to see creative and innovative thinking that builds on the course materials while taking us beyond them. The best papers tell the instructor something that I would not have known. Remember: You have something to contribute. I would like to read about it in your learning summary. Assignment Overview This activity is designed to help you examine power. In the article, the author describes 48 laws that govern power. The laws should not be read as if law 1 leads to law 2, and law 2 leads to law 3. The laws are independent of each other. In other words, one law could state that one can gain power over someone by being nice to that person; another law could state that one can gain power over someone by being mean to that person. Independently both laws could be true (depending on what motivates different people). Please read the following notes on The 48 Laws of Power at: htt s: www.nate|iason.com notes 48-laws- ower- robert-greene). Note: If clicking on this URL does not work, copy and paste the URL into a browser window. After reading the laws, write a short paragraph describing a situation that you have witnessed where one of the laws was being used. If you have not witnessed one of the laws, pick one of the laws that you find interesting, and write a paragraph explaining why you find the law to be interesting or useful. When reading the laws and completing the activity, please discuss the ethical implications of using or not using the laws in organizations. Your submission should be double-spaced, 12-point type, and have one-inch margins, and should be in APA format.
