Research literacy Pre-test The two scenarios (Part A. and Part B. below) are designed to determine how our course material influences your research literacy, and at the end of our course, you will give your thoughts on the same two scenarios (A and B) once more. Your answers will not influence your grade - as long as you demonstrate an honest effort to respond as instructed to the prompts, you will earn full credit for this research literacy pre-test. Please answer prompts 1, 2, 3. Your tasks are marked in gray, and the unmarked portion is the scenario that you are responding to. Imagine you are working on a research project and you are writing instructions that your classmate will carry out. The purpose of the research is to determine whether the drinking water in Albuquerque is safe for cooking, washing dishes, and drinking. More specifically, the project investigates if the heavy metal concentrations in the drinking water taken out at the homes of consumers is the same as what is measured at the city reservoir. 1. Explain how you would investigate this question. Be as specific as you can be about the sequence of steps you would take. Provide detail (how, when, where, what, and who) such that your classmate could follow your instructions. Note: you don't need to explain or name the chemical analysis method or instrument that is used to actually make the measurement. You can refer to the actual analysis as the measurement.' Part B.* (*B is a different project than part A above) Your partner on a research project drafts results for a poster you will both present at a regional conference. They share a draft with a research question, table and bullet points below, which relate to data you collected and analyzed. In the study, we collected and analyzed soil at four sample sites (A, B, C, D) for the presence of the harmful metal ion X.' We hypothesize that the plant matter in the soil could take up and remove/sequester the metal ion 'X' from solution. Briefly, we collected the soil sample five times at each site. Once collected, we added water to the sample to make an aqueous solution. Any solid matter was filtered out, and the remaining aqueous solution was analyzed for the presence of the 'X'metal ion. For each case runs 1-5 had similar plant matter at a given site Leaving out run 2, we see a trend that the site with the least plant matter has the highest amount of metal ion X'in solution (it made sense to leave out run 2, because if we leave in run 2, we don't see a clear trend) Since we successfully collected data from four sites in the field, we have enough data points to skip the 'lab sample' (the lab sample would have been a sample that we would have created that had a known amount of X'in solution with 1.0 g of plant matter added by the investigators) Plant matter can successfully mitigate the amount of 'X' metal ion in solution 2. Write a three- or four-sentence summary of the research project that communicates the main findings to an interested friend or family member who isn't familiar with the project. 3. In addition, write constructive criticism of the draft for your partner. Be specific about what changes or additions you would make to overcome any problems you notice, and why you would make those changes/additions.
