Find aprimary(they conducted the study themselves) peer-reviewed article on a topic that you are interested in studying for your literature review for the class. Then, using the guidelines below, give a summary and brief critique of the article. The summary and critique only needs to be (It can be longer if you need), you also need to include a title page and reference page.
Summary: Give background/introduction, results, and discussion. I'm only looking for about one page of text for the summary. First identify what type of study is it, is it a true experiment where they manipulated an independent variable (if so identify the IV and DV), or a correlational study (in which case be careful about assuming causation), or a case study or something else? (This week is on correlation and there are a lot of correlation articles, so you might want to see if any of the articles you have found so far is a correlational study)The summary should include what the research question was, the hypothesis(es) of the researchers, the IV and DV variables (if they had them), the results they found, and the researchers' interpretation of the results. And it's important to show you read more than the abstract!
- Critique/Assess: What were the strengths of this research (sample size, true experiment, not just correlation, methodology, diversity of the sample, etc)? What were the limitations of this research (again, consider sample size, were they over-interpreting the results, how diverse is the sample)? How does this research compare to other research on this topic? What do you think about their interpretations of the results? Are they overinterpreting?
- Reflect: How does this research fit into your thesis or research question? Does it support your thesis? What parts are applicable to your research question?
Be sure to include a title page, headers, citations in text, and a reference page in APA 7 style. You'll be graded on your APA format, writing mechanics and citations.
Follow the guidelines here for the7th edition APA writing style in the Purdue OWL website
- Use this Website to help you find articles: SLCC: Psychology: Find Articles & Statistics
- It is specifically for Psychology Students
Alternately, you can go toSLCC Libraryand click on "Databases." From there, click on "p" on the A-Z guide. Scroll down to "Psychology and Behavioral sciences collection." Enter search terms to find articles on your topic. You may have to play around with search terms to find what you are looking for and to get an appropriate amount of articles. You don't want to have toread through too many articles and you don't want too few.
Here are some instructions on how to find sources through the SLCC website (You can also use google scholar, etc)
Written steps
- Go to: SLCC Library PageLinks to an external site. then click on the tab for Research DatabasesLinks to an external site.
- Pick a data base (Psychological and Behavioral Sciences is a good one for full-texts) EBSCOhost
- Look up a current research article about the topic of your choice (such as neuroscience). Make sure that it is primary source (avoid reviews for this assignment) and try to find a true experiment (rather than correlation). If you cannot find a true experiment, make sure you identify that in this area of research all you can find is correlational research and note that as a limitation.
- Cite the article using APA style. (include the authors, date, title of the article, journal title, Volume and issue number, and pages)
For Example:
Milgram, S. (1965). Some conditions of obedience and disobedience to authority. HumanRelations,18,57- 76.
- Provide a brief summary and APA style reference of the article (1-2 pages total) and upload into the assignment on Canvas. Be sure to practice APA format for your citation
I've gathered a selection of 10 peer-reviewed journal publications on the subject to help you get started with your literature review on the consequences of sleep deprivation on college students' cognitive performance and academic success. The authors' names, publication dates, article and journal titles, volume and issue numbers, and page numbers are all formatted according to APA standards.
