Research the case of Charmaine Stick vs. The Onion Lake Cree Nation in which Ms. Stick, a band member, took Onion Lake to court in order to enforce a ruling that would see the band post its financial documents online. The band, and numerous others, have been under criticism for financial irregularities, and although the Court of Queen's Bench ordered the posting, the band posted their statements for only 2015-2016.

First Nations bands receive money from the Federal Government, and the First Nations Financial Transparency Act was put in place to hold the reserves accountable for the money they receive; however, the Liberal Government decided to end penalties under the act, reducing the incentive for bands to release their numbers.

According to one CBC article, some Indigenous leaders have defended their actions, by calling "the legislation colonial in its approach and prejudicial, because it requires information about non-taxpayer-supported streams of income that isalready provided to government. Publicizing it violates treaties and privacy under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, they say."
