Researchers are interested in examining whether background noise has an influence on memory recall. They record the number of words recalled by participants presented with a list of words to study for one minute. In one group, 30 participants were presented with a list of words to study in the presence of background noise; and a different group of 30 participants were presented with the same list of words to study in silence. After a brief delay, both groups were tested on their memory of the word lists. The number of words correctly recalled by each participant was recorded and comprises the data.
