Case Study Scenario and Questions:
Damon works as a community outreach supervisor for an insurance company located in Plymouth Meeting, PA. His manager has asked him to create a new festival coordinated with the local municipality which will have local bands, breweries and a 5K run. The insurance company wants to create a fun event that will increase the local profile of the company and donate the proceeds to charity.
The name of the new event is Plymouth Rocks ("PR"). Damon needs to find a local food vendor to staff the event, and also, to supply food at various locations around the event's various activities.
Damon begins to call around to caterers and restaurants in the area to see if any would be interested in the contract. During that process, Ed, a friend of Damon's from high school calls Damon and tells him he works for Conshy Dogs (CD) a favorite hot dog restaurant located in Conshohocken, PA. He heard through the
"grapevine" that Damon was looking for a restaurant to supply food at PR. Ed told him that he could arrange a discount for some food items including some breakfast options after the 5K, and also some other food items for later in the day such as their famous hot dogs.
Damon knows CD has an excellent reputation for good food at a modest price. He believes the restaurant would be an excellent choice because it is located close to the event and locals would be excited to get CD's dogs without waiting in line (as there is usually an extremely long line at this restaurant).
Ed also told Damon this would be a huge favor for him since Ed has had some issues at work and thinks the owner of CD may want to fire him. Having this contract would be "job security."
This assignment should only consider ethical dilemmas and concepts from Chapter 3 of the textbook.
Answer the following questions in your case study response:
- Explain two ethical dilemmas raised by the scenario?
- Apply two of the ethical models set forth in the textbook to resolve the ethical dilemma?
- Based on your analysis, should Damon hire Ed as the food vendor for PR? Why or why not?
Ed offers to "skim" a bit off the invoices for the food supplied so he could give Damon a bit of a "kickback" as a thank you for giving Conshy Dogs the contract.
Based on these additional facts, does this change your analysis. Why or why not?
