- The challenge for cognitive psychologists was to figure out how to focus on mental events that are difficult to directly see. One of the biggest challenges when cognitive psychology research first emerged as a science was figuring out how to focus on mental events that are not immediately apparent. One way is to use indirect measurements, like response time or accuracy on a task, to infer the existence of a certain mental connection. Roundabout measurements, such response time or accuracy on a task, might provide important information about the presence of a certain mental cycle.

Methods for imaging the mind, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), can also be used to focus on the movement of the brain associated with a particular mental interaction. By developing formal models of inductive reasoning, early cognitive analysts attempted to solve this problem.
