One domain within the standards from K-5 is Number and Operations in Base Ten, throughout grade to grade the students' progress and become more advanced in this specific domain. Students in kindergarten begin to work with numbers 11 to 19 to gain foundations for place value (Education, 2018). As they advance to first grade, they will extend the counting sequence, begin to understand place value, and use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract(Education, 2018). This allows the students that come from kindergarten to first grade to understand that place value is important for adding and subtracting numbers. First graders to second grade will continue to understand place value and use place value understanding and properties to add and subtract(Education, 2018). This will ensure that they are continuing to practice place value with larger and larger numbers which will get them ready for higher grades. Students that come from second grade into third grade will begin to use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic, such as a range of strategies and algorithms may be used (Education, 2018). This gets third graders used to rounding whole numbers, fluently add and subtract within 1,000 and multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 (Education, 2018). During fourth grade students will generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers less than or equal to 1,000,000 (Education, 2018). As they move up to the fifth grade, they will need to understand the place value system and perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths (Education, 2018). In the fifth grade the students are using their previous experience to help them with all of the place values, even the after the decimal point.
