Program Description
The educational and life skills-based program for permanently housed clients at St. Vincent De Paul (SVDP) aims to provide them with the education and skills they need to sustain housing and retain employment. Clients for this agency have several needs; however, the primary need is sustaining permanent housing (SVDP, 2023). Program goals should be centered on making a difference in the clients' lives and addressing their needs (Dudley, 2020).
Outcomes
Elements of the program that focus on clients' educational and trade skills would require them to attend college or skills training courses two times a week. Consistent course attendance indicates clients want to improve their social and economic skills. To help regulate their mental health, clients should attend individual and group therapy sessions twice a week. Enhancing their social and communication skills is critical to maintaining employment. Group therapy sessions provide peer support and help develop social skills (Dudley, 2020). Individual therapy provides one-on-one treatment addressing problems that may not be as effective in a group setting (Dudley, 2020). Incorporating a multi-dimensional therapeutic approach gives the client resources to maintain a balanced mental state.
Outcomes Explanations
Clients attending college or trade courses will improve their education and skills, allowing them to gain consistent employment, thus providing viable income to sustain permanent housing. Yazdani et. al. (2020) asserts that employment provides psychosocial and improved identity benefits that give way to empowerment and hope.
Receiving adequate mental health and medical services will support clients' mental health needs in a setting in which they feel comfortable. According to McInnes et. al. (2013), the homeless population has barriers such as inadequate insurance coverage, skepticism about healthcare providers, and facing discrimination due to the stigma associated with homelessness. A stable mindset complements the client's ability to attain financial and housing stability.
