1. The BDI-II has been used for depression and mood disorders. Administeringthe assessment is a 5-10 minute process and the test addresses the past two weeks. This gives a better range to evaluate depression. The BDI-II represents a highly successful revision of an acknowledged standard in the measurement of depressed mood. The revision has improved upon the original by updating the items to reflect contemporary diagnostic criteria for depression and utilizing state-of-the-art psychometric techniques to improve the discriminative properties of the instrument.Farmer argues that test developers were not rigorous enough in evaluating the effectiveness of the assessment, that the test manual is too concise, and that the sample used to generate cut scores did not include adequate racial, geographic, and socioeconomic level diversity (Arbisi & Farmer, 2001).When diagnosing mental disorders clients' socioeconomic and cultural experiences should be considered everytime. According to the ACA Code of Ethics, Counselors need to recognize that culture affects how clients' challenges are experienced and presented. Counselors are professionally obligated to carefully consider the validity, reliability, psychometric limitations, of instruments when selecting assessments that are appropriate for their client.
