Dealing With Office Politics

Have you ever observed office politics? Describe the event in detail. (Do not use real names.) Were there any logical fallacies involved, such as personal attacks or the bandwagon fallacy? (You may pick any logical fallacies to discuss.) In your response, share at least one strategy or practice for dealing with office politics.

Have I experienced office politics?

Yes I have. One time I had a coworker who was eligible for a promotion who was a hard worker and was the best candidate amongst my peers to be promoted to this position. Although this co-worker was the best candidate, my chain of command did not pick this co worker to be promoted. They picked someone who was a whole lot less qualified and much lazier. The reason why they picked this special someone was because they would always hang out outside of work and go drinking together on the weekends. Everyone amongst my workplace saw it and we were all greatly upset about this decision. There was nothing we could do about it. This situation has long passed but we should have dealt with it in a more professional and mature manner. We should have professionally addressed our chain of command about how unfair and unethical of a decision this was.

I worked as a server in a restaurant while I was in high school and in college. There was a group of cooks, servers, and managers that were all friends and they would spend time together after work. I was younger than these people, so I was never invited to go out to the bars or anything after work. I always felt that this certain group of people got treated differently than the rest of us who weren't a part of this group.

Requesting time off was granted by seniority, not by who asked first. There was one girl who was in this friends group who had quit working at the restaurant but came back several months later. I remember she was always given time off whenever she asked for it even if someone else had asked first. In my opinion, the fact that she had quit and then come back several months later should have put her down at the bottom of the seniority list.
