What distinguishes listening from hearing? How does your listening behaviors change in the following situations: A) at a concert, B) in class, C) at the dinner table with your parents, D) in a doctor's office? What are the distractions and other barriers to listening you might encounter in each setting? What might you do to overcome the barriers to effective listening in each situation?

Listening well is essential in many aspects of our daily lives but think about all the things that we hear but do not process. To actively listen, you need to be aware and participate in the interaction, process the information, and give feedback or ask questions as needed. In the examples presented in both A and B, you are trying to focus on one main thing. At the concert, you are most likely listening to the band, and in class, you are listening to the teacher or whoever may be speaking. Depending on the size of your family, it may be easy to hear at the table, but if it is a large get-together, it may be more challenging to focus on just one speaker. One big example I can think of in my daily life is at work. I work in a retail environment where it is speedy past and tends to be loud. There is a large glass display between the customers and me, and some of them still wear masks which makes it difficult to hear everything being said. I have to actively engage with each customer to listen to their entire order and convey any questions or clarification to ensure that I have gotten them precisely what they need. Making eye contact shows that they have my attention, and using nonverbal communication can help relay the message more effectively with the issue of sound barriers. Lastly, repeating the order or asking questions to clearly show that I am actively trying to get their order correct.

Listening is when you can understand what is being said by paying full attention to the words. Listening is different from hearing because it requires attention and interest. A concert is a noisy environment so there would be too many distractions to be able to listen. Places such as the dinner table, a doctor's office or even in a class would usually be quieter. You would be able to hold a conversation and allow yourself to pay enough attention to listen without the distractions. Some distractions would be hearing people talking in a classroom or passing notes. Another would be children crying or people talking in a doctor's office around you. A dinner table would not be too bad because besides eating, usually one person speaks at a time, so it makes it easier to concentrate. I would say at a concert, you would want to try and find a quieter area if you need to have a conversation because with the music and screaming it would be difficult. In a doctor's office and a classroom, you could try to not pay attention to the distractions and focus on something else. I also sometimes must leave the area to be able to listen to something that is important.
