One of the most widely known criminal trials in recent memory involved that of comedian Bill Cosby, who was accused, in that case, of a single incident of sexual assault. Jury deliberations at the end of the trial lased for 52 hours. The time devoted to jury deliberations, 12 hours per day from Monday through Saturday morning, totaled almost as much time as the entire trial. At one point on Thursday, the jurors reported that they could not reach a verdict but returned to deliberations after being asked to do so by the judge. Yet, at the end of these lengthy discussions, no verdict could be reached. Experts speculated that the many inconsistencies int he testimony of the alleged victim may have made it difficult for the jurors to reach the "guilty beyond a reasonable doubt" standard used in criminal trials. Ernesto Miranda was arrested in his own home for a serious crime and held in an interrogation room. He was not informed of his right to remain silent, nor was he informed that he could be represented by an attorney. Eventually, after a two-hour interrogation conducted by two police officers, Miranda signed a statement that indicated he had voluntarily confessed to the crime of which he was accused. On the basis of his confession, Miranda was found guilty. He appealed to the Arizona Supreme Court, which affirmed the guilty verdict. Miranda asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear his appeal.
