The slides this week list the bureaucratic model, elements rooted in Max Weber's principles, shaped police departments with distinct hierarchies, specialized roles, and strict adherence to rules and procedures (Weber, 1947). This theory further incorporates policing by viewing departments as complex systems with interrelated, fragmented components. This perspective underscored the importance of feedback loops, continuous improvement, and the interdependence of various organizational parts (Bertalanffy, 1968). Human relations theory or worker readiness also focuses on police officers' well-being and motivation, asserting that a satisfied and motivated workforce is essential for effective policing (Mayo, 1933). This theory emphasizes leadership, communication, and a positive organizational culture to enhance performance and job satisfaction. Interestingly, this theory was very familiar to me and consisted of many military-like applications, and we can see the parallels in the discussions within the military as well as the pros and cons of some of the elements
