Basically it means that you are testing your theory that you believe to be true at the time with the given information that you currently have. Thus you make a hypothesis and test it to see if your theory is true or not. One and two tailed tests are important because it allows you to really test whether your hypothesis is accurate or not. If it is not accurate you can make a new hypothesis with the information you have discovered. However, if your hypothesis stands through the tests, than you can make an even stronger hold that your hypothesis is correct. 1 specific example of this in the real world is testing out my label maker at work. It was not connecting to my laptop properly and I suspected it needed the new updates on the drivers. After testing my hypothesis with the settings I could diagnose the situation and see that my hypothesis was indeed correct. After downloading the new driver, the printer was able to start working again
