The Center for Disease Control (2023) defines birth defects as "structural changes present at birth that can affect almost any part or parts of the body. They may affect how the body looks, works, or both". Birth defects cover a wide range from moderate to severe and the impact that has on the child depends on what part of the body is involved and how it was affected. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) 120,000 babies are affected by birth defects each year and that a baby is born with a birth defect every four and a half minutes.

Birth defects are such a wide issue that can impact many different functions of the body, that the major obstacles could be a very wide variety of things. According to the CDC, there is research to show that some defects are preventable, some have causes that are known, and some of them are genetic, and some of them the causes are not known. In the Children of Agent Orange (2010) film, the causes were due to the spraying of pesticides in Vietnam during the war. This caused a variety of birth defects; it was shown that some of them struggled with most activities of daily living and emphasized the fact that the parents and families of these children required extra support to care give for these children with special needs.

It is clear that one thing that most any of the birth defects cause new resources, issues and concerns for the family. The impact of a birth defect changes the course of their life and will require special assistance. As a social worker for those who are experiencing a birth defect, it would be essential to make sure that the family is part of that supportive experience. Families might be experiencing a new issue that they do not have had to face and Marshall et al (2020) note that there is no comprehensive national protocol for standards to support these families. As a social worker, I would work in the treatment plan to make sure that the family has access to support through research and referrals. I would also recommend the inclusion of individual therapy for the primary caregivers so that they have the opportunity to take care of themselves and be able to process these changes. Finally I would make sure that if the cognition and abilities are not too severe, to provide individual therapy to the youth that is impacted by the birth defect. They might need to process what is happening and how they are going to proceed with their life knowing what is going on and the challenges that they might face.
