respond to the below discussion board and provide reference
Based upon the presenting symptoms, this 24-year-old female is experiencing and can be diagnosed with a Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) or depression. A major depressive disorder needs to have at least five symptoms (Stahl, 2021) to be classified as depression. Supporting my claim are the following symptoms: (1) sleeping difficulty x 3 weeks, (2) headaches x 3 weeks, (3) fatigue, (4) loss of interest in children's lives, (5) fear of "losing them" in terms of interacting with her children's lives, (6) lack of interest in her usual activities, (7) missing work due to fatigue/malaise, (8) paranoia of having "something bad", (9) frequent crying spells, and (10) loss of weight (10 lbs in two weeks). While the patient has similar characteristics of anxiety that are shared with depression, they don't share the characteristics that are reserved for depression. For example, depression characteristics not shared with anxiety are loss of interest and a depressed mood. The case study states the patient has no medical or psychiatric history (Smith-Nielsen et al., 2018).
Various types of antidepressants are available, such as SSRIs, SNRIs, Atypical Antidepressants, and Serotonin Modulators, etc. (Stahl, 2021). While there are several classifications of medications to treat depression, such as those mentioned above, one group is typically chosen worldwide more often than others: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) (Stahl, 2021). Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) prevent serotonin reuptake, making them more available to transmit information to other neurons. This sends more serotonin to the nerve cells (Kern et al., 2023).
