Student 1:

Hey. I hope you guys are doing well.

Regarding ICS, I am most excited about being able to talk about and hear different thought processes. I think the live sessions will also present an opportunity for us to hear the questions our peers have and gain some deeper understanding. I also appreciate that we can watch a recording for credit if we miss the live.

I'd never previously heard of SAFMEDS. I do intend to use them though and believe the flash cards will be useful as I know a couple of BCBAs who have graduated from the program and recommended flashcards as a study method!

Among other courses I am also excited for 7709 Advance Concepts in ABA. I'm expecting to go over some interesting topics.

Student 2:

Having a personal relationship with someone who is receiving ABA services might impact your experience in the coursework and supervision. Having a personal connection could influence the dynamic of the supervision relationship, which in turn could affect the quality of feedback that is received.

What I am looking forward most to the ICS meetings is being able to ask questions if need be. Also, learning not only things about the class, but other subject matters that may be talked about throughout the meeting that can not be fully discussed in writing.

I have used the SAFMEDS method before, this is a method I would use before a test in high school. This method would help me learn the material quicker, especially when I would procrastinate studying for a test. Also, this method did help me run through any test quickly itself as well. I do believe that the flashcards will be a great help to pass the exam!

What caught my attention in the reading was understanding the importance of gaining knowledge in all aspects of a case before taking on that case, because some individuals may have serious self-injurious behaviors that you are going to have full capability of handling appropriately.

Student 3:

I suppose I am old-school in that I've always used flashcards; however, I didn't know the way I was studying was called, "SAFMEDS." I used them for undergraduate school and during high school. The only thing different is that I never timed myself. It was more of a, just go as quick as you can because it was fun to whiz through them. The timed flashcards we have been working with sort of give me anxiety. Furthermore, I think the flashcard decks available for download aren't the same for me as well. I think I have to physically write down my cards because for whatever reason, my thoughts and handwriting, make the information stick better and make more sense. I think where the online flashcards would be more useful is to help prepare for the certification exam or finals because by then we should be more versed in the terms and the timing of the clock won't be as much of an issue.

Student 4:

Hello!

Since I work in a clinic with BCBAs already I know about the CEUs that are required. One thing that is very interesting to me is the different types of CEUs that you can obtain. Such as learning more about ADHD and Autism and how they can overlap in some areas. A BCBA of mine took a CEU on Ascent and what it means and it has opened my eyes to some of the past practices that have been done in ABA before. Carbone is very big on ascent and uses it in his practice. If you do not know what ascent is, it is respecting the autonomy of the client and ensuring they are comfortable participating in therapy. There is a fine line because you have some kids who use escape and avoidance in therapy. You have to figure out if it is that or if they do not want to ascent to therapy. CEUs are only going to get better as we move further into the future of ABA.
